British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside French warplanes in a combined operation against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the IS group, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, pinpointed through surveillance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountains just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a series of approach shafts down to the site... preliminary assessments are that the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the attack late on Saturday and each participating jet returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - referred to as Daesh - established militant control over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation shows the UK's leading role, and resolve to work closely with our partners, to stamp out any revival of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary remarked.

UK warplanes have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of IS following its routing at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank all the members of British forces involved in this operation for their skill and their courage," he said. "They were part of thousands of British troops deployed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to take out terrorist threats who pose a risk to our safety, shows how our armed forces are always on standby, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security domestically and influential overseas."

In December, the United States armed forces carried out what it termed a "large-scale strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, following an attack killed two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates Daesh still has between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
