Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Partnership.

Consider this a dare for long-term couples who enjoy scary movies: Settle in with your partner and stream Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. On the surface, it may seem like typical body horror, but beneath Together lies a deep meditation about how we choose to love each other.

An Introductory Film Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have been together for a decade. Married in reality in 2017, the actors infuse a particular energy to their characters, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The plot begins when Tim and Millie relocate from the urban environment to the country for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, admittedly, but that’s largely where the cliches cease. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their country house, a tempest descends, and the two tumble into an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a strange force starts to affect the couple. This force compels a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a methodically building horror experience, blending bits of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but never too gross) body horror, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes amidst something disturbing). The director weaves these elements together expertly and presents them in a consistently growing aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is suffering due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and distant from his social circle. He dreads the concept of completely losing his individual identity in Millie. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for transportation.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie refrains from painting either of his characters the obvious villain.

The couple grapple with the sort of issues that are inherent in long-term unions after ten years. Deep down, they have affection for each other. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these anxieties of codependency and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the allegory does not come across as overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other symbiotically.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. Accounts suggest that single viewers have seen the movie as a powerful case for avoiding commitment. Conversely, certain partners having disagreements found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the finale plant anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your significant other and say, “I understand that choice”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can experience today.
